“Jewellery has to work on and off the body, from every angle, like a living sculpture,” believes designer-jeweller Alexandra Jefford whose unconventional sense of beauty and passion for modern art and design has introduced a fresh, new dialogue to the language of contemporary, fine jewellery. Alexandra’s art-inspired aesthetic fuses dramatic, sculptural settings with unconventional combinations of uncut, precious and semi-precious gemstones. These unique jewellery pieces challenge conventions and are powerful expressions of individual style.
Born and raised in Geneva, she moved to London to study Fine Art at Central St Martins where she focused on etching and drawing. After graduating, she pursued a career as an artist and illustrator, but in 2002, following a design course at the prestigious Gemological Institute of America, decided to commit to the decorative arts medium. Rather than adopt a conventional approach, she has migrated to the world of jewellery, developing many of the original ideas and themes that had preoccupied her art. This unique edge is what makes her jewellery pieces not only beautiful and seductive ornaments but also objects with a conceptual and formal interest for design-driven devotees. It has earned her a loyal following amongst art collectors, contemporary artists, fashion editors and film stars.
